Mechanism of Action

Alcaftadine is a H1 histamine receptor antagonist and inhibitor of the release of histamine from mast cells. Decreased chemotaxis and inhibition of eosinophil activation has also been demonstrated.

Contraindications, side effects, etc.

Contraindications: Should not be used if allergic to alcaftadine or in children younger than 2 years old. Not recommended for treating eye irritation caused by contact lenses. Warnings: Avoid use while wearing contact lenses; wait at least 10 minutes after using Lastacaft before putting in contact lenses. Do not let the dropper tip touch any surface to avoid contamination. Side Effects: Common side effects include mild burning, stinging, or irritation; eye redness or itching; runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, flu symptoms; headache. Serious side effects may include changes in vision, eye pain, increased eye redness, itching of the eye that worsens or lasts for more than 72 hours​​​​.
