Mechanism of Action

Phenylephrine stimulates the dilator muscle of the iris, causing pupil dilation; Tropicamide blocks the responses of the sphincter muscle of the iris and the ciliary muscle to cholinergic stimulation, causing pupil dilation and paralysis of accommodation

Contraindications, side effects, etc.

Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to tropicamide, phenylephrine, or related substances. Warnings: This combination medication may cause transient blurred vision, light sensitivity, and should be used with caution in patients with narrow-angle glaucoma. Common Side Effects: Common side effects include blurred vision, photophobia, stinging or burning sensation, and temporary increases in intraocular pressure.
