
Indication
Postoperative inflammation in cataract extraction and temporary relief of pain and photophobia in corneal refractive surgery

Mechanism of Action
Inhibits prostaglandin synthesis by blocking cyclooxygenase (COX)

Dosage/Instructions
Cataract Surgery: 1 drop qid beginning 24 hours after surgery for 2 weeks; Corneal Refractive Surgery: 1-2 drops within the hour prior to surgery, then 1-2 drops within 15 minutes after surgery, continued 4 times daily for up to 3 days

Pregnancy & Nursing
Animal studies show no teratogenicity but no adequate human studies; use only if needed in pregnancy. Unknown if excreted in breast milk; nursing decision should consider drug importance

Contraindications, side effects, etc.
Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to diclofenac or related NSAIDs. Contraindicated in patients with a history of asthma, urticaria, or other allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs.
Warnings: Diclofenac sodium can cause eye irritation and burning upon instillation. It may also increase the risk of ocular complications and should be used cautiously in certain eye conditions.
Common Side Effects: Common side effects include eye irritation, stinging or burning sensation, eye redness, and transient blurred vision.
