Mechanism of Action

Mechanism of Action

Activates muscarinic receptors in the iris sphincter muscle and ciliary muscle, contracts the iris sphincter muscle, constricting the pupil to improve near and intermediate visual acuity while maintaining some pupillary response to light.

Dosage

Dosage/Instructions

1 drop in each eye once daily. A second dose may be administered 3-6 hours after the first dose. If using more than 1 topical ophthalmic product, administer at least 5 minutes apart.
Pregnancy & Nursing Data

Pregnancy & Nursing

No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Oral administration in animals did not produce adverse effects at clinically relevant doses.

Contraindications, side effects, etc.

Contraindications: Do not use if allergic to pilocarpine. Not recommended for those with a detached retina, iritis, or uveitis. Warnings: May cause blurred vision and impair reactions. Avoid driving or hazardous activity until you know how this medicine will affect you. Side Effects: Common side effects include increased sweating, muscle tremors, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, redness of the white part of the eyes or inside of the eyelids, trouble breathing, watering of mouth, blurred vision, eye irritation or pain, and watering of the eyes. Serious side effects include chest tightness, fast heartbeat, fever, hives, itching, skin rash, joint pain, swelling, and redness of the skin
